Use the Essentials Reader to build fluency, develop higher-order thinking skills and increase students' background knowledge!
From acorn hunting to the history of chocolate, Essentials Reader contains high-interest texts that target students' comprehension and critical thinking skills. This reader grows in complexity as new phonograms, spelling rules and high-frequency words are taught. Stories range from text using only single-letter phonograms to poems to full articles.
At the beginning of each story, teachers and students will find a list of “challenging” words to decode before reading the text. Decoding these words prior to reading the text helps students focus on comprehending the content rather than sounding out words.
The Essentials Reader is 100% decodable - without guessing and without sight word memorization - when introduced as directed in the Essentials Teacher’s Guides.
Combined with the Essentials Reader Teacher's Guide and Student Activity Book, the Essentials Reader PDF may be used as a complete reading comprehension and composition program for grades 2-3 or struggling readers of any age. Save when you purchase the complete set!No License

Testimonials
I am using Essentials with my 4th and 5th grade students. I love that I can combine some instruction for both of them and also have different levels for their different abilities. The teacher manual is easy to understand and the material holds their interest and is excellent.

It took 3.5 years, but this girl just completed Essentials level A—all 30 lessons! We started when she was in 3rd grade, newly diagnosed dyslexic, and had tried a zillion other reading/spelling/writing curricula. She’s in 6th grade this year and now we will cycle back around to level B. We have moved through the first 7 lessons of level B in 2.5 months! It shows us that we’ve both learned a whole lot about the “whys” of the English language!
