Essentials a la Carte
About the First and Second Editions
This set lists both the 1st Edition Essentials Teacher's Manual (closeout - now discounted while supplies last -- final sale) and Student Workbooks (printed copies available while supplies last) and the 2nd Edition Teacher's Guide and Student Workbook for Volume 1, as well as the supplements used with the Essentials curriculum. Volume 2 of the 2nd edition is currently in development.
Essentials 1st Edition was published in 2012. It contains the entire Essentials curriculum in one volume.
Essentials 2nd Edition is in two volumes. Volume 1 was published in December 2015. Volume 2 is in development and scheduled for release in January 2017.
Those who are looking to start in the 2015-2016 school year and who would prefer to purchase an already completed program may be happier with the 1st edition. Those seeking curriculum for fall 2016 or later, or who want the new multi-level instruction, improved format and layout, and expanded vocabulary coverage in the new version of Essentials, are likely to prefer the 2nd edition. To learn more about the differences between the two, see Essentials 2nd edition.
Most of the supplements on this page are used with both the first and the second edition.
The Teacher's Manuals and Student Workbooks will only work with the corresponding Teacher's Manual or Workbook from the same edition of Essentials.

Note about 1st Edition Student Workbooks
Students may use whichever handwriting style they are learning, manuscript or cursive, with the Essentials Workbooks. In the first edition Workbook, the sample handwriting text in the printed book is in manuscript, and a free downloadable Essentials Workbook Cursive Supplement PDF provides alternate cursive version copies of the workbook pages that include handwriting as a resource for any students who need additional support with cursive handwriting.
The 1st edition PDF-format workbooks are available in Cursive and Manuscript versions. These are identical except for the font used in the examples on some pages; choose the workbook for the handwriting style your student is learning or already using comfortably.
Please note that Essentials does not teach handwriting; if the student requires handwriting instruction, begin with The Rhythm of Handwriting. Wondering which to choose? Learn why we recommend cursive.
Ordering for Multiple Students?
You will need one Workbook (for the edition you have chosen) and one Spelling Journal per student. Simply order your teacher materials and first set of student materials here, and then add additional copies to your cart as needed. If you are teaching more than four students at once, we recommend adding an additional pair of Game Card decks so everyone can play!
Essentials books are offered in two formats: printed and PDF.
- The 1st Edition Teacher's Manual is a casebound, durable hardcover. 612 pages.
The 2nd Edition Teacher's Guide, Volume 1, is a casebound, durable, full-color hardcover. 632 pages.
- Workbooks are quality paperback, with perforated pages for easy tear-out.
1st Edition: 484 pages.
2nd Edition, Vol. 1: 320 pages
2nd Edition, Vol. 2: in development
The digital PDF format of the 1st edition includes two file options: Print and Electronic.
- The print version is formatted in single pages.
- The eReader version is formatted in spreads for optimum screen display.
The digital PDF format of the 1st edition includes one file that works for printed and digital use.
Using PDFs digitally- Many teachers and students have happily used the entire curriculum digitally on a tablet, with no printed books, not even workbooks. Apps such as GoodReader and Adobe Reader allow students to "write" on the workbook pages electronically.
Printing PDFs- Some customers purchase the PDF version with the intention to print it themselves. They are often shocked to realize how much it costs to print these books at home! The 1st edition Teacher's Manual is 612 two-color pages, while the 2nd edition Teacher's Guide is 632 full-color pages in Volume 1 alone! The workbooks are over 400 pages. Printing on most home printers will cost more than the printed price of these books.
Our PDF format books come with a limited reproduction license. Please read the terms of each license before purchasing.
Single family license - For use by the members of an immediate family, including parents, children, and grandparents. Homeschool co-ops must purchase one license per family.
